One of the eleven working major ports of India, is ideally located almost midway between Calcutta and Madras (880 Kms. from Calcutta and 780 Kms from Madras) at a latitude 17° 41’ N and longitude 83° 18’E serving a vast and rich hinterland

The location of the Port is very ideal in the sense that it affords protection from cyclones which strike the east coast regularly, by a high promotory intothe sea, known as Dolphin’s Nose Hill which is to the south of the entrance channel and Ross Hill to the North of the Entrance channel. The low tidal range of a maximum of 1.82 mtrs., is also advantageous for the location of the Port.
